Toddlers are naturally curious and eager to do things on their own. While it may take a little more time (and patience!), encouraging independence helps children build confidence, problem-solving skills, and resilience.
While we do our best to encourage independence at our Vancouver daycare centres, here are a few simple ways you can support your toddler’s independence at home:
Offer them more choices.
Giving toddlers simple choices, like choosing between two pairs of socks or deciding which book to read, helps them develop decision-making skills while keeping routines manageable.

Let them try before you help.
Offer your child the chance to attempt a task first, without immediately stepping in to help. Whether it’s putting on shoes, washing hands, or cleaning up toys, these small steps to self-sufficiency help build perseverance. Offer encouragement and assistance when needed.
Create predictable routines.
Children thrive when they know what to expect. Consistent daily routines help toddlers feel at ease and give them more opportunities to take initiative. For example, when they know that lunch time is ending soon, they will be more likely to put their sandwich container away all on their own.

Celebrate their wins, even the small ones!
Learning new skills takes plenty of practice. Praise your toddler’s effort to do certain tasks, acknowledging how hard they worked to, for example, zip up their jacket by themselves. These small moments of success motivate them to keep trying.
Give them meaningful responsibilities.
Toddlers love to help! Simple jobs like watering a plant, putting dirty clothes in the hamper, or carrying their own backpack foster a sense of responsibility. These tasks build up their confidence in their ability to do things independently.
